After his early work at the Soho Weekly NewsThe Dallas Morning News and New York Newsday, writer and editor Jeremy Gerard joined The New York Times as the Broadway reporter. He spent most of the 1990s as New York bureau chief, chief drama critic, and reporter on the staff of Variety and Daily Variety .


At New York magazine, he was a features editor, critic, and cultural columnist for nearly a decade. At Deadline.com he was executive editor and chief theater columnist beginning in April, 2014, following eight years at Bloomberg News, where he was a senior editor in the cultural news department, chief drama critic, and human rights columnist.

Along with his freelance work, Gerard blogs at WBUR's Cognoscenti and regularly writes for Broadway News and Theater News Online. He has served as chairman of the jury for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and as president of the New York Drama Critics Circle (where he remains a member) and has taught cultural reporting and criticism at the Columbia University and New York University graduate schools of journalism.

Gerard has written two books: ACT TWO: Creating Partnerships and Setting Agendas for the Future of the American Theater (TCG Press) and the highly praised WYNN PLACE SHOW: A Biased History of the Rollicking Life & Extreme Times of Wynn Handman and The American Place Theatre (Smith & Kraus).
